Before the 1917 revolution, there were 33 churches, two monasteries, two theological schools and a seminary in Simbirsk. Already by 1940, only the Resurrection Cemetery Church was completely preserved of them. In a somewhat distorted form, the Virgin of Neopalimovskaya Church, the Resurrection-Germanovsky Cathedral, the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles and the bell tower of the Church of the Three Saints at the previously existing theological seminary have survived to this day.
Spiritual revival, which began throughout the country in the 1990s of the XX century, did not pass by Ulyanovsk. Thanks to the initiative of local residents and priests, many new churches were erected, including in areas of the city where there were no churches at all. These are the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos in the Peski microdistrict, and the Annunciation Church in the Far Zasviyazhie.

Spaso-Ascension Cathedral
The idea of building a cathedral in Ulyanovsk appeared back in 1989, when the Ulyanovsk diocese was revived. Construction began a few years later. Due to the crisis that broke out in 1998, construction stopped, and only in 2015, the Savior-Ascension Cathedral opened its doors to parishioners. The temple was built in the Baroque style and has a capacity of 2000 people. Its prototype was the Ascension Cathedral, which was lost during the Soviet years.

All Saints Temple
All Saints Church belongs to the complex of the Ascension Cathedral. It was erected in 1996. It became the first temple to be erected in Lenin's homeland after the end of the Soviet era. The construction was carried out exclusively on donations, and not only from residents of the city, but also from various enterprises. Help was provided even from the Vatican. The church was built in the tradition of northern temple architecture according to the project of a married couple of architects Leah and Alexander Varyukhin.

Resurrection-Germanovsky Cathedral
The temple was built at the beginning of the 18th century on the site of a chapel dedicated to the memory of the meeting of the icon of St. German of Kazan with a particle of his relics. At the beginning of the 20th century, with the advent of Soviet power, the temple was closed, in the 30s the bell tower was dismantled, and the building housed the regional state archive, which existed here until 2007. Currently, the bell tower has been restored, the temple has been restored to its original appearance.

John the Baptist Church
The temple was built in the Zheleznodorozhny district of Ulyanovsk (Kindyakovka) in 2010. The prototype was the Nikolsky temple from the Mordovian Ruzayevka. The consecration of the temple took place in early 2012. In the temple there is a reliquary with a shoe from the relics of St. Spyridon of Trimyphus and his icon, consecrated on the island of Corfu, where the relics of the saint rest. The icon of the holy infant martyrs of Bethlehem is also highly venerated.

Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker
The first stone in the foundation of the future temple was laid in 1996. A year later, a wooden St. Nicholas Church appeared in the Aviastroiteley area of the New City of Ulyanovsk. In 2002, a fire broke out, only the foundation of the temple survived. Later, it was expanded and the construction of a stone three-altar church began. In 2011-2012, the construction was completed, and a year later, the work on the internal improvement was completed.

Temple of the Burning Bush icon
A small wooden church in the name of the icon of the Mother of God "The Burning Bush" was built in 1912 at the expense of V.V. Obukhov and other parishioners. The icon "The Burning Bush" was painted especially for this temple on Mount Athos. A commemorative inscription has been preserved on the icon to this day. The inhabitants of Simbirsk revered this image very much and considered it miraculous. Currently, the temple has the status of a cathedral. Many shrines have been preserved in it.

Temple of the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles
The house church at the Simbirsk Chuvash school was built in 1884 on the initiative of the teacher and educator of the Chuvash people I. Ya. Yakovlev. In 1898, the Orthodox Holy Spiritual Brotherhood was founded at the church to provide support to the pupils of the school. The temple was closed in 1918, and in 1991 the revival of spiritual life began in it. Divine services are performed in Russian and in the Chuvash languages.

Temple of Alexander Nevsky
Initially, it was planned to erect a large stone church-monument to the soldiers who died in the battles for the Fatherland in the park near the UAZ recreation center. However, due to funding disruptions, only a small wooden chapel was erected. It was built in 2010 and consecrated in honor of the holy noble Prince Alexander Nevsky. Public debate continues over the construction of a new large temple with a capacity of 500 people in the city. The current temple can accommodate about 80 people.

Church of the Resurrection
An amazingly beautiful church in the Russian-Byzantine style was built at the city cemetery in 1911. The author of the project was the new city architect F.O. Livchak. During the years of Soviet power, the temple remained active. It has preserved pre-revolutionary wall paintings. In 2000, the temple was restored, and a new cross was erected on its main dome. In 2006, the temple underwent restoration again and was painted in more pleasant colors. Recently the Resurrection Church celebrated the 100th anniversary of its consecration.

Temple of Three Saints
The stone church was built in 1999-2004 on the site of the Church of the Three Saints destroyed in 1996. It was dismantled along with the building of the theological seminary, in which it had been located since 1864. However, the bell tower built in 1893 has survived. A new building of the Church of the Three Saints, built according to the project of the chief architect of the city V.I. Nekrasov. In 2010, an electronic bell control system was installed in the bell tower.

Temple of Cosmas and Damian
The temple is located on the territory of the Ulyanovsk Regional Clinical Hospital. It was built and consecrated in 2005. This is a small wooden temple with a capacity of 250 people, reminiscent of an old Russian tower. The temple is crowned with five figured domes. The church contains particles of the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, St. Ambrose of Optinsky, St. blessed Matrona of Moscow and other saints.

Vladimirskaya church
One of the three churches of the temple complex, founded in the Zavolzhsky district of Ulyanovsk after the end of the Soviet period - in 1990. The temple in honor of Saint Prince Vladimir was erected in just 8 months. It is a small one-domed red brick temple topped with a golden dome. The temple has sewing and carpentry workshops, a blacksmith's shop, and a workshop for the restoration of icons.

Annunciation Church
The temple was built in 1995-1999 in the Dalnee Zasviyazhie area according to the project of the architect Fr. Alexy Kormishin, who is also an Orthodox priest. This is a fairly spacious wooden temple, recognized as one of the most beautiful temples in the Volga region and has already become an architectural monument of the 20th century. The parishioners themselves took part in the construction. Most of the icons were also donated by believers. The iconostasis of the upper church is carved, the icons in it are painted according to the Old Russian canons.

Church of St. Andrew the First-Called
The temple in the New Quarters of the Left Bank opened its doors to parishioners in July 2013.It is built of bricks and painted white, contrasting with the bright green roof slopes. A hipped-roof bell tower rises above the refectory of the temple. The church has two side-chapels - the upper one in honor of St. the Apostle Andrew the First-Called and the lower one in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Life-giving source".

Chapel of the Icon "Joy of All Who Sorrow"
A small wooden chapel at the Emergency Hospital was built with funds from Silen LLC. Consecrated in 2008. Despite its modest size, the chapel is crowned with five gold domes. It was built according to the same project as the chapel of the Holy Martyr Irina on Lokomotivnaya Street - an octagon on a quadrangle with a hipped roof.

Temple of Panteleimon the Healer on the Lower Terrace
A one-story wooden church in honor of the holy great martyr and healer Panteleimon was built on the initiative of the believers in 2006. The shrine of the temple is the list of the Seven-Day Icon of the Mother of God, made at the beginning of the 19th century. As a sign of special reverence and gratitude for the fulfillment of prayers, parishioners bring various precious jewelry to the icon. The temple has a rectangular shape and is lined with clapboard.

St. Mary's Church
The temple belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church. It was built in 1913 for the Lutheran community, which had existed in Simbirsk since 1777. The Lutherans already had their own church, but it was dilapidated, and it was decided to build a new one. The church had two organs - stationary and mobile. In the 30s of the XX century, the church was closed, and only in 1991 the building was returned to the Lutheran community of St. Mary. The restoration was carried out, a new organ was installed - a gift from Germany.

Church of Olga Equal to the Apostles
A small brick church of simple architecture was built in the Zavolzhsky district of Ulyanovsk in 1996. It is included in the temple complex named after Saints Equal to the Apostles Princess Olga and Prince Vladimir and St. righteous John of Kronstadt. Since 2015, the church has belonged to the revived Assumption community of co-religionists (named after the lost Assumption Church of the same faith built in 1867). Services are held weekly.

Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos
A new wooden church was built on the territory of the Peski microdistrict in 2015 at the request of believers. It is located on the banks of the Sviyaga River and is part of the temple complex in honor of the Cathedral of All Saints who shone in the land of Simbirsk. The Church of the Intercession has become the first Orthodox church in this part of the city in the last hundred years. The internal improvement of the temple continues.

Temple of Joachim and Anna
A small brick church was built on the territory of the Zheleznodorozhny district of the city in 2002-2004. Immediately after its construction, it became clear that the temple could not accommodate all believers, so it was decided to build a more spacious St. John the Baptist Church nearby. The temple complex also includes an administrative building, where the refectory and Sunday school are located.
